Cape Air Carries Medical Teams and Supplies to Haiti
For Immediate Release: February 01, 2010-Hyannis, MA –
Cape Air’s Cessna aircraft are heading to the Island of Haiti today carrying medical personnel and relief supplies. “This makes total sense and is the right thing to do,” says Cape Air President, Dan Wolf. “We have the right size aircraft, the geography works with Haiti’s proximity to our Caribbean operation and the need is great.” Working with several Haitian relief organizations including the United States Virgin Islands Haitian Relief and Go-Ministries in Santiago, Dominican Republic, Cape Air is sending medical teams from St. Thomas to Port au Prince and supplies from Santiago in the Dominican Republic to the smaller airports outside of Haiti’s capital city.
“Cape Air’s 402 fleet is the perfect size for this mission,” says Wolf. “When we remove the seats we can move an estimated 20,000 pounds of supplies a week and are able to access smaller runways in the outlying areas where there is a huge need for supplies. A number of Cape Air employees are involved in the Haitian relief effort including pilots, mechanics and other ground personnel providing back up and extra duty to cover the shifts. Cape Air plans to run one plane for medical personnel and another for supplies for this week. Cape Air employees are making voluntary contributions to help underwrite the fuel costs for the relief missions and the airline is currently in discussion with other Haitian relief agencies to find ways to fund the endeavor for a few more weeks.
